    Why Structured POS Training Matters

Starting a new job in the fast-paced Australian retail or hospitality sector can be daunting. With peak periods in cities like Melbourne and Sydney often seeing a high volume of transactions per hour, a new hire who isn't confident on the Point of Sale (POS) system can lead to long queues and frustrated customers. A structured training plan gets new staff confident sooner and cuts down on costly mistakes at the register.

    Step 1: Simulated Environment Practice

Don't throw your new hires into the deep end during a Friday night rush. Use the 'Training Mode' feature available in modern POS systems. This allows staff to practice ringing up items, applying discounts, and processing mock EFTPOS transactions without affecting your real business data or tax records.

Step 2: Mastering the Menu Logic

Australian hospitality businesses often have complex modifiers—think 'extra shot,' 'soy milk,' or 'no onion.' New staff should spend the first two hours of their training simply navigating the UI. Understanding the category hierarchy ensures they don't hunt for buttons while a customer waits. Encourage them to memorise the locations of high-volume items to build muscle memory.

Step 3: Handling Errors and Refunds

Standard errors, such as a declined card or an accidental double-entry, are the primary sources of anxiety for new staff. Create a cheat sheet that stays near the terminal. It should cover:

    • How to void an item before the sale is finalised.
    • The protocol for processing a refund in accordance with Australian Consumer Law (ACL).
    • How to perform a manual override if the scanner fails.

Step 4: EFTPOS Integration and Cash Handling

While Australia is moving toward a cashless society, cash handling remains a core skill. Ensure staff know how to open the till manually for emergencies and how to reconcile the payment solutions at the end of a shift. Modern integrated EFTPOS sends the amount directly to the terminal, reducing keying errors—make sure staff know never to manually override this unless instructed.
